World Injury Conference

SAFETY 2020 Innovation, Engagement, Action: For a safer future

Adelaide, Australia

Nearly 5 million people die every year and millions more are disabled from injuries brought about by road traffic crashes, drowning, falls, burns, poisoning or violence. In most instances, these injuries are preventable.

For those affected, injuries cause tremendous pain and suffering. Dealing with their consequences is often a long and arduous task for victims and their families and, for those whose livelihoods are already precarious, may push them into poverty.

At a national level responding to injuries consumes precious health resources, drains economies and impedes progress towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The theme of this 14th World Conference "Innovation, Engagement, Action: for a safer future” suggests the need for a fresh perspective on how to prevent injuries and violence and respond to those who need care and treatment.

While in many countries even proven prevention measures are still lacking, Safety 2020 offers a space to reflect on alternative solutions and better ways to engage a broader segment of society to act for a future which is safe and secure for all.

The World Conferences, which are co-sponsored by the World Health Organization, gather some 1500 of the world’s leading experts from academia and the scientific community to exchange the latest knowledge and experience in understanding and addressing injuries and violence. To accelerate action on the evidence-based interventions highlighted, the World Conferences also encourage the participation of policy-makers, practitioners and advocates.

The International Organizing Committee and the national hosts are committed to making Safety 2020 a great success. Please join us in this endeavor.
