Reflections from the President

Happy fall! As students and faculty are returning to campuses we cannot help but feel both excited and anxious at the same time. Across the United States and around the globe, communities continue to battle the physical, social, emotional and economic effects of the pandemic. This includes increases in rates of injury and violence such as firearm violence, traffic fatalities and others. The need for research to inform injury and violence prevention may never be greater and our members are meeting this challenge.

The SAVIR Advocacy and Policy Committee aims to actively promote injury and violence prevention, control and research through the development of specific policy positions and statements. The goals or recommendations of these positions and statements are realized through direct advocacy and broad dissemination to stakeholder groups. Our charge is to collect and disseminate injury research findings; to partner with public and private organizations to educate the public and advocate for research funding and evidence-based policy at the local, state, and federal level; and to help translate injury research into meaningful educational and communication materials for policymakers and other stakeholders.

Conference Updates

Date: March 30 - April 1, 2022 - Multiaccess

The Call for Abstracts is now open! Please visit the SAVIR website for more information. We are looking for submissions for 4-hour Short Courses, 90-minute Technical Workshops, Scientific Abstracts, and Group Sessions. See the website for more detailed descriptions of each of the different options. Submissions are due on October 22, 2021. Group session ideas must be submitted as individual abstracts by October 22nd and then submitted as a group session by Nov 5th.

#SaferStorage Day of Action

T4CIP (Trainees for Child Injury Prevention) is leading the charge for a Day of Action on October 27, 2021 to prevent firearm injuries to children through #SaferStorage and teaching parents about ASK. To participate, share messaging about safer ways to store firearms and about how families can ASK adults where their children will be visiting if there are guns in the home on social media that day using #SaferStorage.

On November 18, SAVIR and the nation’s leading injury and violence prevention organizations will come together to raise awareness about the burden of injury and violence.
