SAVIR E-News: May 2020

Reflections from the President

As I begin my year as SAVIR President, we are experiencing an unprecedented public health crisis that has substantially changed how we live, work, learn and recreate. It has changed how we conduct studies and how we teach the next generation of injury and violence prevention researchers. We still do not know what the long-term impacts will be, but it is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic will affect injury and violence in substantial ways, both positive and negative. We have already seen early evidence of reductions in motor vehicle crash deaths and sports injuries due to a decline in exposures, and increases in domestic violence and firearm purchases. As researchers in the field, it will be incumbent upon us to conduct rigorous science and learn from this experience in order to prevent injury-related morbidity and mortality in the future.
